0315 Installing Point in a Citrix/Terminal Server environment

Point is not longer shipped via CD and is only available for installation from a MyCalyx installation e-mail. If you have not converted your account to an online MyCalyx account yet - please call your sales representative at 800-362-2599 to facilitate your change and verify that you will have enough licenses for the installation.

  1. When you have activated your MyCalyx.com account, log into https://www.mycalyx.com
  2. From the landing page, click Manage Users.

  3. From the Manage Users page, click Add a User.

NOTE: A user must be created for every terminal server server that Point will be installed on and you can only use one e-mail address per terminal server.

  4. Enter a Nickname and E-mail Address.
  5. Insert a check into the End-User Role (  ) checkbox.
  6. Select the Point version you want to install from the Version dropdown list.
  7. Click the Save icon  (  ).

A system-generated email will be sent to the e-mail address that you specified with a link to download and install Point.

  8. Go to the terminal server to which you are installing Point.
  9. The terminal server must be in Install Mode prior to installing Point.

    • Click Start > Run.
    • In the Open field enter CMD and then click OK.
    • At the command prompt, type change user /install and then press <Enter>.
The following message appears: "User session is ready to install applications."

  10. The terminal server is now ready to install Point. Access the e-mail inbox that you specified when you created the user. When the MyCalyx installation e-mail arrives, click the install Point link.

  11. When the Point installation has completed, you will need to switch the terminal server back to Execute Mode.

    • Click Start > Run.
    • In the Open field enter CMD and then click OK.
    • At the command prompt, type change user /execute and then press <Enter>.
The following message appears: "User session is ready to execute applications."

If you have multiple citrix/terminal servers, remember that you must create a different e-mail address for every server and use the installation link from the e-mail to upgrade.

Configuration Parameters

There are several ways to deploy client software on your terminal server. Some users may need to apply additional configuration parameters for Point to function accordingly when each individual user is logged into the terminal server or accesses Point.
When Point is initially installed on the terminal server, there is a configuration file in the Windows directory (Winpoint.ini). When you open Point, it will access c:windows winpoint.ini to determine settings such as, which folders and templates the user will have access to.
In a terminal server/citrix environment, each user has a windows folder in their user profile directory that is separate than the windows folder on the server. When Point is installed on the server, it will create the winpoint.ini file in c:windows on the server.
In some cases, you may need to copy the winpoint.ini file into each user’s windows directory that is in their user profile on the server. When a user logs in and launches Point - Point will read the winpoint.ini contained in their user's profile windows directory to determine which folders and templates they have access to.

Some users that use Point in this environment tend to have a mapped drive letter to each users home directory, also known as a home drive. Although a home drive is not required - Point does seem most operable with this configuration.

Common Issues

Error: Use Point Administrator to connect at least one data folder
Symptoms: When you open Point, the error occurs. If you log into the server as the Administrator and then launch Point - it works but when you log in as a user, the error appears.
This is usually related to the winpoint.ini file. The winpoint.ini file contains each folder path that the user will have access to when they launch Point. The error indicates that Point cannot find a valid data folder path. In most cases it works when logged in as the administrator but not when logged in as the user. This is an indication that the winpoint.ini contains a valid path for the administrator but the user does not have a valid winpoint.ini file in their user profile windows directory.

Look for the winpoint.ini file in c:\windows and copy it into the windows directory of the user's profile and then launch Point as the user. You can also launch pntinfo.exe in c:winpoint on the server. The executable will open a System Information window that will display which path Point is using for the Windows directory and this might help you determine where the winpoint.ini file is located.

Message Boards
